The South Pacific has some of the most diverse marine life on our planet and many scuba divers will tell you that some of Polynesia's most spectacular views are to be found under her stunningly blue waters. There are more than 500 species of fish, coral and other sea creatures in the invitingly warm and pristine seas of this region and many of them can be seen just a short distance from the beaches of Tahiti and Bora Bora. Some of the best known images of Bora Bora are of the bungalows on stilts, rising out of the calm waters of the Bora Bora lagoon. What you might not know it that many of these bungalows have glass panels in the floor, so that you can admire the multi-coloured corals and fish that swim beneath from the comfort of your bed. Staying in such idyllic Bora Bora accommodation and feeling so close to the South Pacific Ocean and its incredible wildlife, inspires many people to hire some scuba equipment and book a diving trip to get even closer to their underwater neighbours.

The proper spelling of the name, rarely used though, in the Tahitian language is Ra’iatea, meaning bright sky; Ulieta is an obsolete transcription commonly used in the 19th century. The chief town on Raiatea is Uturoa, administrative center for the Leeward Islands (French Îles Sous-le-vent). The islands of Raiatea and Tahaa are both enclosed by the same coral reef, and may once have been a single island. Raiatea is both the largest and most populated island in the Leeward Islands
